Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) – The Buffalo Bills defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 23-19, on Saturday to open the 2023 preseason at Highmark Stadium.
Right away this year, I get to start with my Arrows Up:

ARROW UP:
S – Damar Hamlin
Hamlin would be on this list just for showing up and playing in a live football game against an opponent for the first time since going into cardiac arrest on the field against the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 2.
However, he played well, collecting three tackles, including a couple hard hits on stops.
QB – Matt Barkley
Barkley was probably the best offensive player in the game, going 14-of-15 for 172 yards and throwing two touchdowns.
RB – James Cook
Four carries, 20 yards and a touchdown. Cook was explosive each time he touched the ball on Saturday.
Depth wide receivers
10 different Bills players caught passes. Four of them caught, at least, three passes, while four caught, at least, two passes.
At the top of the list were wideouts Andy Isabella (3 catches for 42 yards), KeeSean Johnson (3-for-42), and Dezmon Patmon (3-for-35 and a touchdown). Getting in on the act were fellow receivers Marcel Ateman (2-for-41) and Tyrel Shavers (2-for-38 and a touchdown).
RB – Latavius Murray
Murray continued his strong training camp and preseason by collecting 39 total yards. The 33-year-old looked fresh and fast on the field.
P – Sam Martin
Just another day at the office for Martin, who only punted twice, but pinned both of them inside the Colts’ 20-yard line.
LB – Dorian Williams
Williams led all tacklers with seven total stops, including six solo tackles! He was fast to react, and played very physical.
Boogie Basham and Tim Settle
The combination of Basham and Settle wreaked havoc on the Colts offense for a series of plays in the second quarter, which resulted in back-to-back sacks, one by each player.
Run and short yardage defense
The Colts ran for just 3.1 yards per-carry. The Bills run defense did a great job overall, but particularly on short yardage attempts, where the Colts were stopped two different times on 4th-and-1.

ARROW DOWN:
WR – Khalil Shakir
Shakir has had an inconsistent training camp and preseason.
It continued with a terrific catch on a long third down on Saturday, but was then followed by a big drop on the same drive that cost the offense a big first down gain.
He was targeted four times and caught two passes for 25 yards.
QB – Kyle Allen
Allen wasn’t helped by a couple of drops, but he also misfired on a few passes he should have been able to complete.
The 27-year-old finished the day going 8-of-15 for 122 yards, including an interception that was returned for a touchdown against the offense.
TE – Jace Sternberger
Sternberger made a really nice catch over the middle, but fumbled the ball a few seconds later after being hit. The Colts recovered and had a chance to tack some points on the scoreboard.
Penalties
The Bills were called for eight penalties for 59 yards. That’s too many, even for a preseason game.
Running game overall
While Cook was good, the rest of the running game, as a whole, was not. The Bills ran for just 3.2 yards a carry on 26 attempts.
