Orchard Park, N.Y. — After a disappointing training camp for new Buffalo Bills backup quarterback Kyle Allen, the 27-year-old — who is in his first season with the team — struggled in his debut against the Indianapolis Colts Saturday afternoon.

Bills coach Sean McDermott was asked whether the backup quarterback job behind Josh Allen was an open competition. He answered definitively, “Yes.”

Kyle Allen completed 8 of 15 passes for 122 yards and a bad interception that was returned for a touchdown. That was the last pass he threw in the game.

McDermott was asked to assess the backup quarterbacks and said things changed when Matt Barkley took over in the third quarter.

“I thought it was kind of hot and cold at times,” he said. “I thought that we moved the ball at times and then we stalled out or we weren’t — more than anything — productive enough on early downs in the first half. And then in the second half, I felt (was) a little bit better moving the ball on a more consistent basis (and) Matt getting the ball out. I thought he got into a good rhythm and my hat goes off to him.”

Barkley was as efficient as a quarterback can be while he worked against the Colts’ third-team defense. He completed 14 of 15 passes for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns to receivers Tyrell Shavers and Dezmon Patman. The Patman touchdown was a play call from Josh Allen, who was wearing a headset all game on the sidelines.

“I don’t know the actual number (of plays that Josh called),” Barkley said with a smile. “I do know that touchdown to Dez on the left. We had talked about it on the sideline and I’m like when we’re in good field position, on a good third down, let’s get it called and he called it. It might have been that whole drive, I think. Yeah. I mean, Dorsey was still in my ear the whole time but I think Josh was relaying them up. I don’t know, I don’t want to give him too much credit here.”

Patmon was working against Colts cornerback Darius Rush and faked inside and turned toward the pylon with some separation. Barkley fired off the pass before he was clobbered and Patmon made the catch in the end zone.

Barkley’s performance changes the conversation at backup quarterback and now puts additional pressure on Kyle Allen, who threw a bevy of interceptions during camp. The former Houston Texans backup said earlier in the week that he’s still getting used to the Bills’ complex offense.

After the game, Kyle Allen said he thought the game went smoothly – for the most part.

“I think last time I talked to you guys, we just wanted to execute, we wanted to put some plays together,” he said. “I thought had some good third-down conversions. We’d like to get the ball in the end zone more but I mean, just overall I was pretty happy with it.”
