In case there was any doubt, Stetson Bennett is Georgia’s starting quarterback as the College Football Playoff begins. And the health of JT Daniels evidently remains a question.

For the first time, or at least in the most clear terms, head coach Kirby Smart stated Wednesday that Bennett would start, a departure from the coy approach he has taken the latter part of this season.

And in doing so, Smart also indicated that Daniels’ health is still an issue.

“Stetson is our starting quarterback,” Smart said, when asked whether there was a plan for using Daniels in Friday’s game. “The JT situation will be what’s the situation (in the game), right? And also if he’s healthy enough.”

Daniels was the starting quarterback to begin this season, then sat out one game with an oblique injury, started two more games, then went out with a lat muscle injury. Bennett started in his place and has kept the job, despite Daniels being 7-0 as Georgia’s starter over the past two seasons.

Todd Monken, Georgia offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, forcefully defended Bennett and the decision to keep starting him on Tuesday, his first news conference since the season began.

“I thought Todd did a good job of addressing that yesterday,” Smart said.

But Smart acknowledged that it may not be a popular decision.

“There’s fans that may not agree with it, that may agree with it, media may not agree with it, may agree with it,” Smart said. “Our team understands that we’re going to give our team the best opportunity to win and Stetson does that. And that’s not to knock on JT. That’s the part that’s so sad about this is that you guys want to ask us as coaches questions, I want to answer them as honest as possible, but the hardest thing is every time you ask a question, you drive the comparison home.

“Really, at the end of the day, they’re both different quarterbacks, and they’re both good in their own right, and I think we’ve got four quarterbacks capable of winning big here at the University of Georgia, and Stetson is our quarterback right now.”

Why is Smart being less coy about the QB situation now, two days before the game?

Seth Emerson, Georgia beat writer: There’s always the possibility that this is a massive head fake and we’ll see Daniels against Michigan. More likely, especially with Daniels having arrived two days after the vast majority of the team arrived in Miami, this is Smart being tired of the public uncertainty over it, and giving Bennett the public pat on the back.

Is there still a scenario where Daniels plays on Friday, or in a potential national championship?

Emerson: Per sources, Daniels was getting some first-team reps in Athens bowl practices. Bennett was going to be the starter, but he may have been on a shorter leash for Friday’s game. The leash may be longer now with Daniels’ health being an issue. But if Georgia wins, there’s also a chance Daniels gets a longer look for a potential rematch with Alabama … if his health allows it.
