Six Paris Saint-Germain players have complained to club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi following comments made in an interview by Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe gave an interview to French publication France Football, via L’Equipe online, in which he called PSG a “divisive club” which tends to “attract gossip”.

The France captain was responding to a question about whether people now “trivialise” his performances, and he responded by saying that playing for PSG “does not help”.

Mbappe also suggested that PSG had perhaps reached a “glass ceiling” with regard to their lack of success in the Champions League, suggesting it was a question that needed to be answered by those “who build the team”. He added that the players — including himself — had “given their all” and “did what we could”. PSG were knocked out in the round-of-16 stage against Bayern Munich, suffering a 3-0 aggregate defeat.

Mbappe’s comments also appear to have upset PSG fans, who have been vocal in their displeasure on social media. Of the players that complained to Al-Khelaifi, two are said to be new signings at the club.

The interview was published on Saturday but was conducted last month, and therefore before recent developments surrounding his future at PSG.

Mbappe informed the Ligue 1 champions last month in a letter that he will not be triggering the extension option in his contract that would take his stay in Paris until June 2025.

Al-Khelaifi said earlier this week that Mbappe would not be allowed to leave for free next summer — when his contract expires — and that the 24-year-old had two weeks to decide whether to remain at the club. PSG sent Mbappe a three-page letter, dated July 3, accusing him of causing “enormous harm to the club and informing him he had a deadline of July 31 to resolve his future.

Mbappe previously said last month he would remain at PSG for next season before making a decision about his future in the summer of 2024.

He signed a new contract with PSG in 2022 after months of speculation that he wanted to join Real Madrid. The contract was presented as a three-year deal by PSG, with Mbappe holding up a club shirt with ‘2025’ on the back, but was actually a two-year agreement with the forward holding the option for an extra season.

PSG are preparing for the 2023-24 campaign under new head coach Luis Enrique after parting company with Christophe Galtier after one year in charge.

The French side have so far signed Milan Skriniar, Marco Asensio and Manuel Ugarte, with all of those arrivals announced this week. They are also close to confirming the signings of Lucas Hernandez and Kang-in Lee.
