Paris Saint-Germain reportedly won’t stand in the way of Neymar returning to FC Barcelona.

Paris Saint-Germain will agree to let their forward Neymar possibly return to former club FC Barcelona according to SPORT.

The Qatari-owned Ligue 1 giants shocked football in 2017 when activating the Brazilian’s €222 million ($244 million) release clause at Camp Nou and smashing the world transfer record which still stands to this day.

Six years on, current head coach Luis Enrique – who managed Neymar from 2014 to 2017 in Catalonia – and sporting director Luis Campos have told the sport’s most expensive player to find a new club according to RMC Sport.

The 31-year-old doesn’t feature in the ex-Spain boss’ plans at the Parc des Princes, and this development comes after Neymar similarly told PSG that he wishes to leave at the weekend as reported by L’Equipe.

Neymar also reportedly informed his current employers of how he pines for a return to Barca, which is complicated because of the Blaugrana’s financial woes.

One possible solution for everyone however involves Neymar being bought by a moneyed Saudi club first and then being sent to the reigning La Liga champions on loan.

According to SPORT, PSG won’t stand in the way of this operation going ahead despite frayed relations between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Simultaneously, it would also be a way of smoothing things over with the Catalans after recent bad blood.

While not only snatching Neymar away, PSG also snapped up Lionel Messi on a free transfer in 2021 and are about to complete a €50 million ($55 million) deal for Ousmane Dembele.

Barca were powerless to stop all three of these moves going ahead, but Neymar’s arrival should help them offset losses incurred from temporarily moving to the Montjuic Stadium while Camp Nou is being renovated, which have been put at around €90 million ($99 million).

President Joan Laporta has to convince his manager Xavi Hernandez that landing Neymar makes sense.

Though nobody doubts Neymar’s potential on the pitch, there are concerns that he could be a disruptive influence in the locker room with Xavi knowing the Santos academy product well from their days playing for Luis Enrique.

With three weeks to go until the transfer window closes, there is plenty of time for Barca and the Saudis to pull off the coup.

Should the Saudis get cold feet and be unwilling to stump up the €150 million ($165.36) asking price PSG have set for Neymar according to AS, Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte reported that the player’s contract could possibly be rescinded.

Were this to go ahead, Neymar would forego a good portion of guaranteed money until 2027, which Forbes estimated at $50 million a year in this year’s World’s Highest-Paid Athletes list.

In this manner, however, he could join Barca for longer than a year if lowering his salary expectations to fit in with their Financial Fair Play limits, and wouldn’t even have to had to the Middle East yet if at all.
