On his first pass in his first NFL preseason game for the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, quarterback Bryce Young connected with wide receiver Adam Thielen for a 10-yard gain and a first down.

But that was the only first down for Carolina during Young’s three series running the Panthers’ offense against the New York Jets at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“It was just lack of execution, starting with myself,” Young said. “There’s things I definitely could have done better. I think us as a unit, we all take accountability and we all look in the mirror first. … We have to learn from it. We have to own it. We have to get better.”

After three series, Young gave way to Matt Corral at quarterback. But the former Ole Miss standout couldn’t get the Panthers moving either as the Jets posted a 27-0 victory.

“What we just talked about in there was it was a good week that ended on a bad note – this game,” Carolina coach Frank Reich said. “And, obviously, the game weighs more important than the week, but you got to keep everything in perspective, so that’s what we do. We look at every play, every player. We evaluate everything. We grow from it and look forward to diving into the tape and getting better next week.”

The completion to Thielen came on a second-and-8 snap at the Carolina 27-yard line on the Panthers’ opening series after the Jets got a field goal on their first possession.

The No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft on April 27, Young followed his first completion with a 5-yard connection to wide receiver DJ Chark on the next snap.

But a false-start penalty preceded a 4-yard run by Chuba Hubbard and an incompletion on a long throw to Chark as the Panthers’ first possession ended in a punt.

Carolina’s second possession started at its 2-yard line. Young had a 3-yard completion to Hubbard on second down, but a third-down incompletion targeting wide receiver Laviska Shenault brought Panthers punter Johnny Hekker on the field for the second time.

Carolina’s final possession with Young under center on Saturday started at the Panthers 28-yard line. Young and tight end Hayden Hurst connected for a 5-yard gain on first down before Hubbard gained 1 yard on second down.

On third down, New York defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson sacked Young for a 9-yard loss and another three-and-out.

Young also was knocked down by defensive end Solomon Thomas on the completion to Thielen, and linebacker Jermaine Johnson II decked the former Alabama All-American on the long incompletion to Chark.

“That’s part of the game, of course,” Young said. “Football’s a physical sport. It’s part of the job description: You’re going to get hit. …

“As a quarterback, you go months and months without actually getting hit. Kind of every year, kind of the first time you get hit, it’s cool, like, ‘Cool, has it happened? All right, I remember what it feels like. We’re back playing football.’ It’s the first time I’ve been hit since college.”

In his inaugural preseason outing, Young completed 4-of-6 passes for 21 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Bryce was accurate,” Reich said. “He got rid of the ball quickly. There’s some good in having to try to overcome some bad field position, which we did not do. … We talk about this all the time: Let’s get the tough situations and put ourselves to the test. And so we had a couple of those today. We didn’t pass those tests, but those are good to learn from. …

“We don’t want to see the pressure we had. …Obviously, that first hit was pretty big. I asked him on the sideline, I waited until the second half. I said: ‘Well, that was a pretty good welcome-to-the-NFL hit. How’d that one feel?’ And he said he was fine. He said he barely felt it.”

Carolina had its projected first-team offense on the field with Young, although the Panthers projected a plain package with little motion or shifting. The Jets started with their No. 2 defense on the field, with former Auburn standout Jamien Sherwood perhaps the only player dressed for the game who could be an opening-day starter for New York.

“I’m willing to take it on the chin a little bit in preseason to hide some things that we’re going to do in the regular season,” Reich said.

The Panthers play the second of their three preseason games at 6 p.m. CDT Friday, when Carolina visits the New York Giants.
