A new deal has been reached between old business partners.
Golden Boy Promotions announced Thursday morning a renewed multi-year, multi-fight partnership with sports streaming service DAZN, continuing a relationship that began more than three ago.
The renewed deal will allow Golden Boy to maintain its premium dates and proceeding with its monthly Golden Boy Fight Night On DAZN prospect based developmental series which returned earlier this year.
“We are delighted to extend our partnership with Golden Boy,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights, DAZN. “Golden Boy has an excellent stable including some of the hottest prospects in boxing, and their shows always feature non-stop action from the first bell to the last.
“As part of our new partnership we will be looking to unearth the next generation of boxing talent in our new development series ‘Golden Boy Fight Night on DAZN’.”
Specifics were not disclosed with the announcement, other than the confirmation that the two sides can move forward with a long-term deal in place rather than continuing to operate in good faith.
Golden Boy took all of its business to DAZN in late 2018, shortly after HBO confirmed its bowing out of the boxing business after more than 40 years as an industry leader. The news was massive at the time, as Golden Boy boasted the sport’s biggest star in then unified middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez among its deep roster of talent ranging from young prospects to elite-level champions.
Golden Boy was forced to reshuffle the deck after the pandemic, which included the loss of Alvarez from its roster in a messy divorce. Its Fight Night series – which began in 2019 and quickly gained traction – was on hold for more than a year, as Golden Boy was forced to ride out 2021 without a firm deal in place beyond years end.
The first several months of 2022 saw the promotional company and streaming platform operate in unison while finalizing terms for the announced deal. A positive sign came with the return of the Golden Boy Fight Night series earlier this spring, with the guarantee of a monthly series moving forward.
Golden Boy will also enjoy one premium date per month. It’s next show will come June 11, featuring former WBO Junior middleweight titlist Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31KOs) – one of the platform’s biggest draws but whose career has stalled during his middleweight campaign. Munguia faces England’s Jimmy Kelly in a 12-round bout above the middleweight limit live from Honda Center in Anaheim.
Future dates for Golden Boy will include a July 16 show intended to feature lightweight contender Ryan García (22-0, 18KOs) in the main event. Also eyed for the show is a WBA junior bantamweight title consolidation clash between full champ Juan Francisco Estrada (42-3, 28KOs) and Golden Boy-promoted secondary titlist Joshua Franco (18-1-2, 8KOs). Rising welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. is expected to headline an August 6 show.
Golden Boy’s roster also includes: unbeaten former super middleweight titlist and current light heavyweight contender Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (44-0, 30KOs) who is fresh off a knockout win on a May 14 DAZN show; two-division and reigning WBA strawweight champ Seniesa ‘Superbad’ Estrada (22-0, 9KOs); unified WBC/WBA flyweight champion Marlen Esparza (12-1, 1KO); former IBF junior lightweight titlist and current lightweight contender Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz (32-2-1, 15KOs); and rising lightweight contender William Zepeda, among many others.
