Pittsford, N.Y. — Damien Harris projects to have a prominent role this season for the Buffalo Bills, playing complement to second-year running back James Cook.
During Bills training camp at St. John Fisher University last week, Harris said he believes he was brought into Buffalo to improve the balance of the offense and the rushing and that he has a personal obligation to do so.
“I definitely feel that obligation personally, as well as you know, all the guys in the room, and not because of a lack thereof in the past but just because that’s what we’re here to do.”
Harris, who is coming off a couple good seasons with Bills’ divisional rivals, the New England Patriots, knows that he and the other running backs are brought to play many different roles on the offense.
“As running backs, we got to do a lot of jobs. We got to block, we gotta run, we got to catch, we got to do all things, so you know, whether it’s running the ball, catching the ball, running good routes, blocking and protecting Josh (Allen), you know we take a lot of pride in that so obviously we want to improve the run game, but we want to improve the passing game, we want to improve the pass protection game you know however we can possibly affect the offense you know that’s what we are here to do.”
The Bills could have been missing a balanced offense, and Harris believes that could help take the overall burden off of Josh Allen and let him be himself.
“I want to take as much of the burden off Josh as I possibly can. I want to let him be able to go out there and play free. Throw the ball, stay healthy, and you know, do his thing.”
