On Monday, The Athletic revealed Kylian Mbappe had agreed personal terms for a transfer to Real Madrid.

The France international and World Cup winner is regarded as one of the finest forwards in world football. He has scored a remarkable 116 goals in 141 games for Paris Saint-Germain, his current club, and won a litany of honours since making his senior debut at the age of 16.

The Athletic has taken a look at the significance of this news, the build-up to this potential deal and the 23-year-old’s back story.

What we know

Mbappe has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid. However, he has not yet signed paperwork with the Spanish club.

PSG, the French champions, are still trying to convince him to change his mind and stay in Paris.

Mbappe’s contract with PSG runs out at the end of the season. This means that he is able to move to another club for free in the summer.

Has this been coming?

Yes. Madrid have been very confident for a significant period of time that Mbappe is coming to the Santiago Bernabeu and are just waiting for his signature, which they expect to come once PSG’s season is over.

Last summer, PSG rejected a bid from Madrid worth €160 million (£135 million) for Mbappe a week before the summer transfer window closed.

Over the days that followed, reports emerged across Europe that suggested Madrid had made a second offer — this time worth €180 million (£152 million). Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was said to be optimistic a deal could be done.

But The Athletic was told at the time that a second offer did not arrive, at least not formally, although there have been suggestions in the French media that this proposal came verbally during conversations. PSG, however, did not see a need to respond when the offer remained below their valuation. Further suggestions that Madrid came in with a final €200 million (£170 million) approach on deadline day were also understood to be inaccurate.

PSG ended up keeping hold of Mbappe for the season, but that interest from Madrid never went away.

Mbappe has also rejected at least two new contract offers from PSG to keep him in Paris.

Have Real Madrid courted him for long?

Absolutely. Perez has long seen Mbappe as the jewel to make sure his shiny new Bernabeu stadium is full of trophy celebrations and eager fans once it is officially opened. The stadium is currently under redevelopment.

Perez has made no secret of this wish, which some have described as an obsession, and has conditioned his club’s entire transfer policy for at least two years.

Before PSG played Real Madrid in the Champions League last month, a source close to the dressing room in Madrid said: “Everybody here hopes to count on him next season.”

How is Mbappe viewed in France?

The Athletic travelled to Paris earlier this year. Two days spent travelling around Paris and speaking to Parisians revealed a complicated relationship between a city and its no-longer-quite-so-golden boy.

Mehdi Ben Ariba, a waiter at Harry’s Cafe and a PSG fan from the city, said: “Lots of the people who come in here, they know him, they played football with him. We are all so proud of Kylian.”

However, not everyone was so positive about Mbappe.

Lucas, a local teenager said: “He disrespected our club. If he leaves, it’s not so bad.”

Christophe Larcher, a journalist with France Football, told The Athletic: “Everyone just thinks PSG is the place to be. So why doesn’t he want to stay? The fans are confused.”

What is his back story?

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was struck by Mbappe as a teenager. “When I saw him the first time I said, ‘It’s Pele!’,” Wenger said. Pele, the former Brazil striker, is considered to be one of the greatest footballers of all time.

Wenger now views him as the heir to two other greats. “We have had two players for 15 years setting the standard. (Lionel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo dominated the world of football. We will rate really what these two guys have done for football with a little distance. To perform like that for 15 years is unbelievable, phenomenal. You wonder, who is coming next? We have found one candidate for sure.”

Mbappe’s path through the football ecosystem has been planned and prepared with precision. It is as if he was somehow programmed to succeed from boyhood. The extraordinary influence of his parents is a central theme.

His father, Wilfried Mbappe, was the coach of AS Bondy and takes care of everything in the sporting sphere. His mother, Fayza Lamari-Mbappe, was a professional handball player and she oversees all personal and image aspects. They work with a prudent and tactful sports lawyer, Delphine Verheyden, and a trusted supporting cast. Everything is kept close. Nothing is rushed or risky.

Despite having an obviously coveted prospect on their hands from a young age, Mbappe’s parents disregarded the approaches of agents desperate to represent their son. The lure of riches, introductions, and promises to make him a star were politely declined. They were certain that would happen anyway, without the need for any outside interventions.

As a youth player and young professional, the family were given a personal tour of Real Madrid from Zinedine Zidane, they spent a week at Chelsea, they listened to Wenger when he paid a visit. But decisions have always been made strategically in a way to suit them. A foreign club will no doubt come into the equation at some point but they felt no pressure to take that leap while Kylian was a teenager.

This potential move to Real will take him a long way from his home in Bondy, a suburb on the outskirts of Paris that shaped him.

Mbappe has slowly moved from Bondy, to Monaco, to Paris — and now, potentially, to a European superpower in Madrid.

When would he officially join Real Madrid?

This is unclear.

His contract with PSG will expire on June 30, 2022. That means he would be free to move to Real at any stage after that day — i.e. from July 1.

However, as mentioned above, the French giants are still hopeful they can convince him to change his mind on a move to Real.
