The Dallas Cowboys have had a top-tier two-back system for their offense for the last few seasons, with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. After the release of Elliott, it appeared as if Pollard would see an increased workload in 2023, but after the first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, that may not be the case.

At 5’5, 179 pounds, Deuce Vaughn slid in the 2023 NFL Draft due to being “undersized”. Yet, his size had no effect on his performance on Saturday. Vaughn didn’t make much of an impact in the first half, as he was behind Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle on the depth chart for the game. In fact, his only first half action was a 25-yard kick return. On that return though, he made a highlight reel cut that stood out, and it didn’t stop there as the second half became his statement time.

Vaughn started after halftime in the backfield, and on his first attempt had a great spin move on a Jaguar defender that led to a six-yard run. For the rest of that drive, he finished with 20 yards over four attempts. Over the rest of the time on the field he had a total of eight attempts which went for a total of 50 yards and even a touchdown which gave the Cowboys their first lead.

It was an impressive first showing for Vaughn, one that could just have implications on his role beyond the 2023 NFL season. What do I mean by that? Tony Pollard is currently playing on the franchise tag, and the way the running back market is, he could very well be gone after this season. Vaughn’s explosive playmaking ability would give the Cowboys reassurance that if they can’t bring Pollard back, they still have someone that can lead on the ground. While the size may have been concerning, with the vision and elusiveness Vaughn has, he makes up for it with finding ways to maneuver around defenders and still get up field. Not only was Vaughn a standout rusher in college at Kansas State, but he also totaled 1,280 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns over three seasons, showing he can also add value that way to the Dallas offense, much like Pollard.

It is still early, but if Vaughn continues this style of play into the season while splitting the load with Pollard, he could very well find himself in position to take over as the lead back for the Cowboys in the very near future.
