Usually an NFL draft pick as late as Day 3 wouldn’t get much media attention, but that wasn’t the case for Dallas Cowboys sixth-round pick, running back Deuce Vaughn. A video has surfaced showing how the rookie from Kansas State was told about his opportunity with Dallas – his own dad called him. Chris Vaughn is the Dallas Cowboys assistant director of college scouting and called his son personally to deliver the message that he’d been selected.

“You want to come to work with me next week?” Vaughn asked on the phone. Deuce answered that he “wouldn’t mind that at all” as the room erupted with laughter and cheers.

Vaughn showing out at training camp

Now that the Cowboys preseason is about to start, all eyes are on the 5′5″, 180-pound running back. At training camp so far, Vaughn has proven exactly why size doesn’t matter and in fact, his shiftiness is one of his strengths. At Tuesday’s practice, Vaughn made a fool of the Cowboys defense, pulling off a spin move and dodging the defender.

Vaughn is now in contention for the running back two position after Tony Pollard, with Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle, and Ronald Jones in the running as well. Jones was a frontrunner, but has been suspended for the first two regular season games, giving Vaughn another leg-up. Vaughn’s advantage over the others is his ability to explode through the creases, using his size and speed to escape tackles. He’s also proven his reliability as a pass catcher in the backfield.

For the Wildcats, Vaughn recorded 2,970 rush yards over the last two seasons and forced an impressive 107 missed tackles. On top of that, he can boast 27 touchdowns in his last 27 games. His passing game is pretty impressive as well, with 101 catches for 846 yards and seven touchdowns over the last two seasons.

There is definitely a role for Vaughn on the Cowboys roster, though what that role is exactly remains to be seen and should become clearer during the preseason. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott seems to think Vaughn will have an impact right away.

“I think he’s going to be a very talented player who can help us immediately,” said Prescott.
