The opening game of any tournament in which a group of all-star players takes the court for the first time as a team is always cause for a bit of uneasiness. After all, you just never know how the players will react to situations they haven’t encountered as a group.\n

But for the USA Women’s AmeriCup Team, Saturday’s debut went as expected. The Americans scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back en route to an 80-54 victory over Venezuela at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Leon, Mexico. Next up for the U.S. will be Argentina in the second game of Group A play Sunday at 4:40 p.m. ET.

\n

“I would say that we’re a work in progress,” U.S. coach Kamie Ethridge said. “I think we have a chance to get better every day. We haven’t been together very long. We have a tremendous amount of talent, and we need to take these games and learn from them and be prepared for the next game.”

\n

Angel Reese, who led LSU to its first national title in the spring, and Rickea Jackson (Tennessee) each had 11 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for the U.S., which is seeking to become the first team to win three straight AmeriCups. Having won four AmeriCup golds previously, the Americans — ranked No. 1 in the world by FIBA — extended their winning streak in this tournament to 18 games.

\n

Janiah Barker, who plays at Texas A&M, added 10 points and four rebounds as 11 of the 12 U.S. players on the roster scored and all played 13 minutes or more.

\n

“A win is a win. I love a win,” said Reese, who also had nine rebounds. “We didn’t have our best game today but working together and playing hard for each other is something that’s important.”

\n

For the second straight time, the U.S. sent a younger roster – all college players – to the AmeriCup.

\n

In fact, the Americans have the youngest roster, with an average age of 20 and no one over 22 years old. Meanwhile, there are three 40-year-olds in the AmeriCup, including Venezuelan captain Ivaney Marquez. Seven players on the U.S. roster made their USA National Team debuts.

\n

“It’s actually kind of crazy because I’m one of the youngest on the team as well,” said Barker, a 19-year-old who won a gold at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and also played on the 2021 3×3 U18 World Cup Team. “But it’s just still a blessing to be with these girls and I’m not learning from them as well. (There’s) a lot of things they asked me about, things that I’ve experienced that they haven’t, just to understand from different points of views. But I’m just trying to be a leader as much as I can, use my voice as much as I can. I’m trying to be the most energetic person on the court. That’s what Coach likes me for, so I just continue to try to use my voice and make sure that I’m encouraging them.”

\n

But as far as talent goes, the U.S. has perhaps the most up and down the roster and that showed from the opening tip.

\n

Facing a Venezuelan team that is the lowest-ranked of the 10 teams here at No. 46, UCLA’s Charisma Osborne scored the first five points of the game-opening 9-0 run, then the U.S. had another 10-0 run in the first quarter, which ended with the Americans up 20-5. All 12 U.S. players saw action in the opening 10 minutes, with six scoring.

\n

There was one point in the opening 10 minutes when the U.S. was without two of its starters. Jackson briefly left the game after she appeared to twist her right ankle 2:51 in, then Reese picked up her second foul 46 seconds later. Reese came back into the game with 1:24 left in the first quarter and only picked up one more foul the rest of the game.

\n

“I really liked how we came in and played when Rickea went down,” Ethridge said. “Angel, (we) challenged her to not get in foul trouble and not to have to pick up that third foul in the first half. Again, I think these are games where we have to experiment a little bit. We have to put our players in positions and see what they can do. We’ll adjust as the tournament goes on and I think we’ll be better because of that.”

\n

The Americans continued to display their depth and balance in the second quarter, opening the margin to 46-16 at halftime, with 10 players contributing points. Venezuela came out in the second half with a little more intensity and forced the U.S. to call timeout in the third quarter, but the Americans responded to end the period with their biggest lead of the game at 66-30.

\n

“This is the first time we’ve played any kind of organized game together,” Ethridge said. “We’re getting adjusted to the physicality of this international style, it’s very physical, something we’re not completely used to. We didn’t make very many free throws (and) clearly there’s things that we can improve on. I feel really good at where we are because I think we can do different things tomorrow. I think we can adjust and I think our players are going to adjust and be better players every single time we step on the floor. So again, I give a lot of credit to Venezuela, they got more physical.”
