Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn recently joined the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] to discuss his first spin through training camp and, of course, his size (or lack thereof) as he enters his rookie season.
Here are some of the highlights, edited for clarity:
Question: Some fans have been referring to you as “The People’s Champion” entering training camp, what do you think of that, is that a burden?

Deuce Vaughn: “I hadn’t heard that, that’s crazy man. Not a burden. Every single day I’m just trying to come out here and gain the respect of everybody in this organization, coaches, players. I’m just trying to show what I can do. Being a sponge every single day, in the weight room, in the film room. Out on the field. Just become my own player, and do everything I can to help the team out. That’s pretty cool though, ‘The People’s Champion.’”
Q: At what point in your career did you start hearing “Don’t worry about his size, the guy’s a monster”?
Vaughn: “I’ve been the smallest player on the field ever since I started playing football. All the way from flag football … I didn’t get to play tackle football until middle school, because of my mom, but I was the smallest one on the field then.
“It’s the only thing I know. I’ve never been the biggest, this is all I know and I’ve adapted to that. I’ve turned it to an advantage. When I was in middle school I played really well, and my love for the game grew as I went along. Got to high school, ended up playing on varsity as a freshman even though I weighed about 145 pounds. Things like that.
“The confidence level started to build as I got to college. The belief that Kansas State had in myself gave me even more confidence to go out and play the way I did. Now it’s like I’m a freshman all over again, trying to regain that confidence and get settled in a new system with a new offense, with new players and new coaches. Just taking it day by day and grinding.”
Q: Is being underestimated a driving force?
Vaughn: “Absolutely. I’ve been doubted my entire career. I’ll probably be doubted no matter what I do. Every single year it’s been ‘Can he do it again?’ After my freshman year at Kansas State — ‘Well can his body hold up?’
Not a lot of offers coming when I was coming out of high school, just because of those doubts and those question marks because of my size. Like you said, it fueled me. It was a chip on my shoulder every single day.”
Q: Zeke Elliott had a very physical running style. When you have the ball, are you looking for contact, or are you saying ‘No, out of bounds is the best option?’
Vaughn: “Whenever I play football I’m pretty monkey-brained, you know? Whatever happens, it happens, if I feel like I can pick up some more yards, I’m gonna go. If I feel like it’s probably a good time to step out of bounds, let’s do it.
“One of the things I pride myself on as a smaller guy is always being the toughest on the football field, you have to be. What that means is I gotta put my shoulder down a couple times, pick up those extra yards, I’m just gonna do it. Of course it’s an 18-week season and you wanna be as fresh as possible, but you’ve just gotta balance it.’
