The United States men’s basketball team’s 2023 FIBA World Cup redemption tour will continue in Malaga, Spain, where the USA will play its next set of warm-up games against Spain and Slovenia ahead of the official tournament tip-off on 25 August.

The three-day friendly event, which will see all three sides play each other once from 11-13 August, will be an important litmus test for coach Steve Kerr and his youthful U.S. side as they look to repair their international reputation.

At the last World Cup in 2019, the Americans finished in seventh place, a result that would reflect their worst international showing to date.

Though Team USA was able to turn the ship around in time to successfully defend their Olympic title at Tokyo 2020, in 2021, the result in 2019 was a sharp reminder that the global dominance of basketball once enjoyed by the US is no longer guaranteed – a reality underlined by their current No 2 world ranking.

Getting to run out against the reigning world champions and a team orchestrated by Luka Doncic, is one the US will prize, not least with this ‘Torneo Centenario FEB’ event arranged to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Spanish Basketball Federation, meaning the sold-out crowd at the Palacio de Deportes Maria Martin Carpena in Malaga on the south coast of Spain, will likely be a hostile one.

As trials go, it’ll be a tough but something the 12-squad, featuring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr., Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero and No.1 2020 Draft pick Anthony Edwards, will welcome.
